Toxic Avengers dump garbage in Maine governor's lawn

In solidarity with the International Day of Action Against Global Climate Change, the Maine Toxic Avenger (MTA) dumped a truckload of construction and demolition debris in the Blaine House Driveway on Saturday July 15. Governor John Baldacci received this deposit at his mansion in response his continual support of the importation, dumping, and burning of toxic construction and demolition debris. Baldacci recently signed the bill LD 141 into law, which endorsed the burning of construction and demolition debris, behind claims of supporting alternative and renewable energy.

The MTA took this action to bring attention to the fact that burning construction and demolition debris is not a safe alternative to burning fossil fuels. Burning construction and demolition debris significantly contributes to climate change, since burning plastics, treated and painted wood, and other mixed debris create greenhouse gasses, including carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds.

A note was left with the debris stating, "Burning Toxic Waste is not Green Energy."
Thanks to Baldacci's actions, companies that burn construction and demolition debris will more easily be able to receive public money intended for "green" and "renewable" energy, and these companies will gain more incentive to locate in Maine, since they are unable to burn this debris in the surrounding New England states.

19 of the 20 hottest years on record have occurred since 1980. Islands in the South Pacific are already evacuating due to rising sea levels. Storms and hurricanes are growing more severe. Polar bears are drowning as their icy habitat breaks apart and drifts out to sea. Greenland and Antarctica are melting. Everyday people spew more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Maine is seeing shorter winters, earlier ice out, threats to maple syrup production, and record precipitation. If no action is taken by the administration to address the problems of climate change, the people will have to take the matter into their own hands.
