One of my favorite passages from Look Homeward, America:

“isolationist” and “provincial” are the stigmata of Middle American culture: they are deployed against any seditious local patriot who suggests that towns, neighborhoods, or provinces might generate their own cultures without the guidance of the placeless commissars of Manhattan, Washington, and Los Angeles. Because, you see, localism implies isolationism, which means peace, and that is the one thing we are never against to be allowed in the United States of Armaments.

I like to believe that in the Midwest, or my native Missouri at least, a bit of the old isolationist (and even anarchist) spirit still survives just beneath the crust, though the evidence is slight.
