Maker of Chomsky Doc Among G-G Award-Winners

by Sarah Milroy
Two Quebeckers round out this year's awards list: -- filmmaker Peter Wintonick and textile artist Micheline Beauchemin, both respected pioneers in their fields. Wintonick, who lives and works in Montreal, is best known for his documentary Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media (1992), made with Mark Achbar and Francis Miquet, which has won 22 awards internationally and appeared in more than 50 film festivals around the world. Down the St. Lawrence from Montreal, Quebec textile artist Micheline Beauchemin lives and works at her retreat at Les Grondines. There, Beauchemin creates works on an intimate scale, but she has also tackled some monumental assignments, such as her design for the stage curtains at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and her commission for Montreal's Palais des Congrès.

The Governor-General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts will be presented on March 22 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. An exhibition of the winners' work runs March 24 through July 3 at the National Gallery of Canada.
