Anti-immigrant, Republican GA State Senator, Eric Johnson, is accosted at Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Savannah, GA, USA.
Dear friends and colleagues:
Yes, by a handful of Latino college age students.
So why did anti-immigrant Eric Johnson show up to a Mexican celebration, especially so soon after his cronies passed the toughest anti-immigration state law in the country?
For the photo-op, of course. He posed with the Teenage Latina Beauty Queens, and as Teenage Queens go these days, they did not recognize him until after the fact. And once they realized, they felt uneasy and used. Not as used as the other Mexicans that have worked in past construction projects of Sen. Johnson's and of Mary Flanders' (anti-immig., Chatham County Republican Party Chair.) She was there too, smiling and posing.
Someone from the crowd screamed out "Hey, Eric, tell us how much you love us! Com'on Eric, tell us, tell us!" (Did he hear it? Did he care?)
Newsflash: Latinos in Georgia, USA, as Latinos generally go, tend to be politically informed and are hungry for more. And we do not appreciate being used.
He tried to make the young Latinos feel better by saying, "this is all about votes." (Did he mean that it's nothing personal?)
So it is not personal that you showed up, smiling, at a Mexican festival because you believed that most people there would be uninformed, illiterate wetbacks?
Maybe next Cinco de Mayo, Sen. Eric Johnson will come better prepared. Maybe like bringing an open mind? Unlikely.
